GF colloquium at UU: dr. Chloe Balla (University of Crete) on Plato’s Phaedo
19 September 2018 @ 17:00 - 19:00
| FreeSailing away from antilogic. Rethinking the Phaedo
In the Phaedo Socrates turns against an unnamed group of people that
he describes as practitioners of disputation (antilogikoi). Reference
to this group occurs twice, in 90b and in 101e and is marked by the
double intervention of Echecrates, the character to whom Phaedo
addresses his narrative in the dialogues outer frame in Phleious. In my
lecture I propose to draw attention to the importance of this criticism
for the economy of the dialogue, to raise the question of the identity
of the antilogikoi, and to show that the answer to this question can
lend us some new insight on the content, the aim, but also the unity of
the section.
