Alton Jones Professor of Philosophy Professor of European Studies Vanderbilt University Seminar 1, 11am-1pm: Performativity, Responsibility and Critique in the Anthropocene If we have entered a new geological age - the Anthropocene - with the future of the planet on our backs, what is it now to be human? How does it change responsibility, and the form of (philosophical) critique? In this seminar we discuss these questions with special emphasis on the role of performativity for contemporary philosophical critique. Seminar 2, 2-4pm: The Idea of Ecophenomenology What role can phenomenology play in addressing the challenges of climate change? David Wood will introduce two texts on the topic, distributed beforehand, in which he draws on Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty and Derrida, followed by discussion. Seminar 1, 11am-1pm: Performativity, Responsibility and Critique in the Anthropocene
If we have entered a new geological age – the Anthropocene – with the future of the planet on our backs, what is it now to be human?
