Hans Van Eyghen and Sümer Şen
The study group will discuss issues in recent philosophy of religion. Philosophy of religion includes discussion about arguments for and against the existence of God, divine properties, such as omniscience, the nature and value of faith, the relationship between religion and science, and religious practices, such as prayer and the sacraments.
The plan is to meet on Fridays at 10:00 am. The first meeting will take place in March and will be online, but may also be held physically at Radboud University if possible. The meeting will be in English unless the group prefers Dutch.
Ideally, for each meeting, a topic will be chosen and prepared by one or two members of the study group. Examples of topics are the problem of evil, the teleological argument, God’s omnibenevolence, etc. Participants will be asked to read one or more texts on the topic in advance. If we fail to gather sufficient numbers of participants able to present a topic adequately, the group will be turned into a reading group. To foster discussion, we will attempt to select texts which take different perspectives on the chosen topic; for example, one text in defence of the problem of evil and one against. During the meeting, the preparing member will briefly present the topic and the texts. The other members will be given a chance to ask questions and then there will be a discussion, led by the presenting member. A book that might be dealt with if the group becomes a reading group is Richard Swinburne’s The Existence of God.
If one member wishes to discuss his or her own text, this will also be encouraged. This member will then be asked to frame his or her text within a topic and look for an opposing text or a text with a somewhat different perspective. During the meeting, the member who submitted the text will present and lead the discussion.
The overall aim is to bring philosophers with an interest in philosophy of religion together and to foster new work and collaboration.
