Workshop on David Hume
7 December 2016
A one-day workshop on David Hume’s A Treatise of Human Nature on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, in room Alfa.
Speakers: David Owen (University of Arizona), Don Garrett (New York University), Kevin Meeker (University of South Alabama) and Jeanne Peijnenburg (University of Groningen).
In 1989, William Morris wrote “If we ever are to understand Hume’s view of the role of reason, … we should first figure out how to integrate ‘Of scepticism with regard to reason’ into the picture”. Morris was referring to A Treatise of Human Nature 1.4.1, where Hume examines a regress argument to the extent that knowledge and justified belief are impossible. Morris calls it the “least understood” argument in Hume’s writings, but the past two decades saw new and resourceful interpretations. In this workshop we will examine some of them.
Attendance is free, but registration is required by sending an email to jeanne.peijnenburg@rug.nl
