The Significance of Phenomenology Department of Philosophy, University of Amsterdam Professor Wayne Martin (Department of Philosophy, University of Essex) Phenomenology and the Experience of Refusal in Anorexia Nervosa Thursday 25th April, 16.00-18.00 Location: Oudemanhuisport F0.02 http://www.uva.nl/en/about-the-uva/the-uva-in-amsterdam/locations/content/oudemanhuispoort.html Abstract: I report on research undertaken by the Essex Autonomy Project, in collaboration with the Institute of Psychiatry at the Maudsley and the Avalon Ward for Eating Disorders.   The aim of this research has been to use resources from post-Kantian idealism and existential phenomenology in order to clarify the medico-juridical challenges presented by refusal-of-treatment among adults suffering from serious mental disorder.  I briefly review results of the research pertaining to psychotic depression, profound learning disability, and schizophrenia, then propose a strategy for addressing the contemporary crisis in UK and International law over refusal-of-treatment by adults with severe and enduring anorexia nervosa. Abstract:
