Confirmed speakers include Karwan Fatah-Black (Leiden), Nancy Jouwe (Utrecht), Anya Topolski (Nijmegen), Wayne Modest (Amsterdam), Jamila Mascat (Utrecht), Naomi Zack (New York), Robin Celikates (Berlin) and Francio Guadeloupe (Amsterdam). On the 16th and 17th June 2022, we are honouring the legacy of Charles Mills with a two-day symposium dedicated to his work. Confirmed speakers include Karwan Fatah-Black (Leiden), Nancy Jouwe (Utrecht), Anya Topolski (Nijmegen), Wayne Modest (Amsterdam), Jamila Mascat (Utrecht), Naomi Zack (New York), Robin Celikates (Berlin) and Francio Guadeloupe (Amsterdam). The speakers will explore questions of race, racism and colonialism in the Dutch and European contexts, interrogating how concepts mostly developed in the United States and the Caribbean context travel across geopolitical boundaries. Please note that the first day of the symposium will end with the Spinoza lecture by Prof. Philomena Essed. The second day of the symposium is dedicated to excavating and interrogating specific concepts and questions raised by Mills’ work—issues of postcolonial justice, reparations, rectificatory justice, the racial contract and structural racism. Time: 16 and 17 June, 9.30-17.00. Venue: Universiteitstheater UvA, Nieuwe Doelenstraat 16-18, Amsterdam. Coffee, lunch and tea will be provided for registered participants to the symposium.
