Dear all,

The OZSW study group Ethics of Biomedical Technology is organizing its second meeting on the 22nd of January 2024, from 15:00 to 16:30 at the UMC Utrecht in the John Snow room (7.118) of the Stratenum building (Universiteitsweg 100, Utrecht). Afterwards, there will be the opportunity to further discuss ideas at the Basket (Genevelaan 8, Utrecht). Although the meeting is hybrid, for those of you joining externally, we would like to ask you to join us live as much as possible. Please let us know if you will join the meeting by sending an email to c.w.safarlou@umcutrecht.nl.

David Lyreskog will talk about “The Ethics of Thinking With Machines, and With Others.” Agenda: 15:00 – 15:10: Introduction by study group coordinators 15:10 – 16:30: Talk by David Lyreskog, including discussion 16:30 – onwards: drinks at The Basket (Genevelaan 8, Utrecht) David Lyreskog - The Ethics of Thinking With Machines, and With Others

“It is exciting times in the tech community. On everyone’s lips are the leaps of progress being made in Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the challenges and possibilities they bring with them. In parallel, we are seeing rapid development in Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI), and other tools aimed at assisting and enhancing human thinking, agency, and collaboration. As we move into an era where these technologies do not only become more prevalent in their own right, but where they may increasingly converge, interesting conceptual and ethical questions arise: is there such a thing as individual ownership of ones thoughts?; what are the ethical implications of Human-AI co-thinking?; what is the difference between collaborating intellectually with another person, co-thinking with them through a brain interface, and co-thinking with an algorithm? In this seminar, I will reflect on some of the work my colleagues and I have recently been doing on these and related issues, and discuss potential ways forward.”

We hope to see you on the 22nd!
