The tradition of metaphysics in a strict sense refers to the books of Aristotle’s Metaphysics and the commentaries devoted to it in Greek Antiquity, in the Arabic tradition and in the Latin Middle Ages. But an accurate grasp of the problems discussed in the Metaphysics and of the influences on its commentaries compels to include the Platonic tradition in the inquiry of the history of metaphysics, i.e. the Platonic dialogues and their proper commentary-tradition, and the systematic elaborations of Platonic doctrine.

The present study-group addresses Platonism, Aristotelianism, and their entwinement in the history of metaphysics, i.e. tendencies to synthesize Aristotelianism and Platonism, or to rather oppose them, in the Greek, Arabic, and Latin traditions of ancient and medieval philosophy. Its activities entail monthly meetings discussion basic texts and annual conferences on central issues in the history of metaphysics.

De studiegroep is bedoeld als een platform voor masterstudenten, promovendi, postdocs en senioronderzoekers. De gemeenschappelijke bestudering van de geschiedenis van de metafysica kan, afhankelijk van de deelnemersgroep en belangstelling, verschillende vormen aannemen. Primair staat de bespreking van klassieke teksten centraal (focus: Plato, Aristoteles, Plotinus, Proclus, Avicenna, Thomas van Aquino, Johannes Duns Scotus). Onderdeel van de studiegroep zijn verder regelmatige verdiepende workshops.

Ook is het mogelijk jaarlijks een internationale ‘graduate conference’ te organiseren waaraan juniorleden van de studiegroep door middel van een voordracht een bijdrage kunnen leveren. Het platform biedt tevens de mogelijkheid om een studiemiddag te wijden aan een belangwekkende recente publicatie. Verdere suggesties zijn welkom. Vooralsnog zijn per semester ca. 5 bijeenkomsten voorzien. De bijeenkomsten worden o.a. via de kalender van de OZSW aangekondigd.
