But there are reasons for doubt. This presentation identifies three, potentially undermining, sceptical challenges aimed at narrative-based approaches that seek to foster mental health. I then offer a way of defending (at least some) narrative-based therapies from these challenges. It is proposed that by focusing on the possibly purely ‘fictive’, rather than the necessarily ‘factual’, character of narrative practices used in certain therapies and forms of self-management, we can rethink what needs to go on for narrative practices to promote mental health and well-being. Should this proposal prove feasible it will afford protection for narrative-based approaches to mental health from a certain group of sceptics, clearing some of the path for their, potential, wider uptake.

Title: Narrative Practices in Mental Health: Narrative Therapy and the Fictive Stance

Abstract: Narrative practices matter to mental health – or so it seems. But there are reasons for doubt. This presentation identifies three, potentially undermining, sceptical challenges aimed at narrative-based approaches that seek to foster mental health. I then offer a way of defending (at least some) narrative-based therapies from these challenges.
