The details are below: Salvation Simulations: A Strategy for Reducing Catastrophic Risks Abstract We can take actions that would raise the probability that there will exist "salvation simulations", i.e. simulations containing many minds like ours in which catastrophic risks are merely apparent.  Such actions would non-causally raise the probability that we are in such a simulation and thereby non-causally reduce catastrophic risk levels. This gives us reason to take such actions on evidential decision theory but not on causal decision theory. On the "evidentialist wager", we have reason to act in accordance with evidential decision theory rather than causal decision theory even if we are much more confident in the latter.  In roughly this fashion, the evidentialist wager suggests promoting salvation simulations as a promising strategy for reducing catastrophic risks.  In this talk, I'll develop the argument for this strategy and offer an initial evaluation of the argument. Salvation Simulations: A Strategy for Reducing Catastrophic Risks

Abstract

We can take actions that would raise the probability that there will exist “salvation simulations”, i.e. simulations containing many minds like ours in which catastrophic risks are merely apparent.  Such actions would non-causally raise the probability that we are in such a simulation and thereby non-causally reduce catastrophic risk levels. This gives us reason to take such actions on evidential decision theory but not on causal decision theory. On the “evidentialist wager”, we have reason to act in accordance with evidential decision theory rather than causal decision theory even if we are much more confident in the latter.  In roughly this fashion, the evidentialist wager suggests promoting salvation simulations as a promising strategy for reducing catastrophic risks.  In this talk, I’ll develop the argument for this strategy and offer an initial evaluation of the argument.
