13 June 2017 @ 15:30 - 17:00
Institutions of higher learning around the globe increasingly find themselves on the front lines of cultural and political battles over free speech. Repeatedly, students, faculty, administrators, and invited guests square off against each other, assuming contrary positions on the limits of thought and expression, respect for differences, the boundaries of toleration, and protection from harm.
In this talk Sigal Ben-Porath examines the current state of the arguments, using real-world examples. She assesses the place of identity politics and concern with safety and dignity within them, and offers an inclusive freedom framework through which to rethink free-speech controversies both inside and outside the classroom. The talk provides perspective on trigger warnings, safe spaces, and speech that verges on hate and the way universities should respond to them in light of their expanding mission and given current political polarization.
