What does it mean to choose? To what extent does choice depend on our ability to predict the future? And how do we decide what is the ‘right’ choice? What kind of life should we be choosing for?

In the movie Mr.Nobody (2009), 9 year old Nemo Nobody struggles with the problems inherent in making choices which will affect his entire life. Director Jaco van Dormael has managed to weave together complex philosophical issues and interesting storylines with humor, wit, and incredible visuals. We follow Nemo through all possible lives he could have from that one moment as a young boy onward. He gets married, has kids, doesn’t have kids, he dies, and he lives. As all possible paths unfold themselves, we are left to wonder how realistic our idea of 'choice' really is.

The OZSW PhD Council invites everyone to join us for this screening of Mr.Nobody, which will be combined with presentations on various philosophical topics pertaining to the notions of choice, chance, and the good life.
