Workshop Order, Legitimacy, and Domination: Realist and Republican Perspectives October 20, 2022 Utrecht University Realism and republicanism are two contemporary theoretical frameworks that propose to make normative political theory more attentive to relations of power and the basic facts about political life. Prominent republican thinkers such as Pettit (2017) even argue that republicanism is a form of political realism. While realism is compatible with non-moralized and context-sensitive conceptions of domination, one might ask whether some republicans’ attempt to link domination with more fundamental moral properties can destabilize this compatibility. This workshop brings together scholars who work on how different conceptualizations of power and domination underpin political orders, and what normative standards can be utilized to criticize them. The workshop is pre-read. The papers will be circulated 10 days beforehand.
