January 23: Masterclass on ‘Scientism and Its Critics’ VU University Amsterdam 14.00h-19.00h (including dinner) This master class is an opportunity for a small group of research MA students, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers to explore the nature and tenability of scientism as an epistemological position under the guidance of and in discussion with some of its leading proponents and critics, to wit: - Alexander Rosenberg (Duke) - James Ladyman (Bristol) and - Mikael Stenmark (Uppsala). Participants will be expected to prepare themselves by reading a few key excerpts from the work of these scholars (to be assigned later). The masterclass itself will be devoted to an intensive discussion of these texts and will conclude with a dinner together with the speakers and participants. To apply, please send a short CV and a brief statement of interest before December 1, 2013 to abrahamkuypercenter@vu.nl. The masterclass is followed immediately by the opening of a conference devoted to scientism, organized by the Abraham Kuyper Center and the Faculty of Philosophy at VU University Amsterdam.
