Academic work culture in pandemic times – Feminist study group 24 June 2021 – 12:00-13:00 Over a year into the covid-19 pandemic, we risk getting used to a situation that is far from ‘normal,’ further still from ideal. Academic work culture in pandemic times - Feminist study group 24 June 2021 – 12:00-13:00 Over a year into the covid-19 pandemic, we risk getting used to a situation that is far from ‘normal,’ further still from ideal. In the words of a recent Nature article: ‘Pandemic burnout is rampant in academia.’ The situation disproportionally affects those with teaching and caring duties – many of whom are women, ‘the fuse box of academia’. The pandemic discloses and increases existing inequalities, but these structural inequalities are, of course, not new. During this first regular lunch meeting, we would like to discuss: how are you doing? How has academic work culture changed during the pandemic? And how does it affect your career? More generally, we are interested in sharing perspectives on the role of work culture in (re)producing existing inequalities in academia. We also hope that our gathering will bring us dreams, examples and experiences of a feminist academia. Annemie Halsema and Catherine Koekoek will open and moderate the discussion. At the end of the meeting, we will collectively find a topic and host for the next gathering. Additional resources and articles can be shared in the slack channel.
