‘’Fixing the adoptee: rethinking the notion of ‘humanity’ through experiences of adoption’’
16 December 2022 @ 12:00 - 13:30
SWIP.NL organizes an online lecture by Sophie Withaeckx (Maastricht University): ‘’Fixing the adoptee: rethinking the notion of ‘humanity’ through experiences of adoption’’
Date: 16 december 2022, 12.00 -13.30 uur.
Abstract:
In this presentation, I will reflect on how the experience of adoption is one about being excluded from normative understandings of humanity. Indeed, as I will argue, the figure of the ‘adoptee’ is one that is fundamentally dehumanized. Adoption scholarship is often complicit in this dehumanization, due to its use of Eurocentric normative understandings of humanity which present the adoptee as not-fully human, but as something/someone that needs to be ‘fixed’ in order to be ‘normal’ again. Drawing on Sylvia Wynter’s understanding of humanity as bios/mythoi-existence, Withaeckx re-reads adoptees’ experiences as a way to subvert and go beyond hegemonic understandings of humanity.
