Knowledge in the Making: The Formation and Development of Thought
Join us for a symposium exploring the intricate processes of knowledge creation and cognition
Knowledge and cognition – i.e. the of process gaining knowledge and comprehension through thinking, experiences, and sensory input – have been central to philosophical inquiry for centuries and continue to shape contemporary debates on politics, society, and science. For example, we may question how throughout the history of philosophy institutions of power have played a role in knowledge creation, how religion has informed theories of cognition, or explore the narratives in the interplay between reason and emotions that often mark the emotions of women as irrational. Following contemporary debates, we may consider concerns on the influence of social media or search algorithms and large language models on our democratic deliberation, the spread of conspiratorial beliefs, or our understandings of ecology and the climate crisis as informed by scientific or indigenous knowledge, to name but a few. This OZSW symposium invites curious minds to explore the theme of knowledge and cognition, from its classical roots to modern traditions. We will delve into the interplay between reason or rationality and emotions, the influence of social, political, and scientific institutions and power structures on cognition and deliberative processes, as well as the potential of data-driven methods for thought and research on the history of ideas.
