ReMA symposium: Attitudes towards Nature

Description

Nature can mean very different things to different people. Our attitudes towards nature will depend on our conceptions of nature and our place in nature. Are we simply part of nature? Do we command nature? Can we ever fully understand what nature really is, in all its physical complexities? As a result of the plurality of existing conceptualisations of nature, we are often faced with disagreements on what the relationship between humans and nature should look like. As the threat of the disastrous consequences of climate change increases, so do the stakes of these debates.

The urgency of these questions also merits inquiry into the theoretical foundations of conceptions of nature. How are attitudes towards nature shaped by moral, aesthetic, or metaphysical commitments? And what are the ethical and scientific implications of such commitments?

These questions can be answered at various levels of philosophical analysis, ranging from theories of space and time to discussions on climate justice. This conference offers a space for diverse views on attitudes towards nature, bringing together speakers from different areas of philosophy.

Keynote speakers:

  • Prof. Carla Rita Palmerino
  • Prof. Doina-Cristina Rusu

This symposium is organized by OZSW ReMA students.
