Marginalisation and Philosophy: problems and solutions
Both historically and in today’s society certain groups have been underrepresented in philosophy. This fact is not an unhappy accident, but the result of a process of marginalisation. Marginalisation as a process affects both what research questions philosophers ask and who studies or works in philosophy departments. Starting from an acknowledgment of the problem, the Autumn School analyses the processes that contribute to the problem, but also studies particular manifestations of the process of marginalisation. Moreover, the Autumn School wants to be part of the solution, not least by showcasing good practices.
This is the first OZSW-SW*IP Autumn School. It consists of lectures and workshops. This event will also host the SW*IP Hypatia Lecture of 2024 by Robert Chapman (Durham University).

Hypatia Lecture 2024
The biannual Hypatia Lecture, organized by SW*IP-NL since 2017, showcases groundbreaking work in philosophy and feminism. This year’s lecture takes place on November 28 at Tilburg University. Everyone is welcome to attend the lecture, either on campus or online. People who want to attend online should register before November 25, and will receive a link to the live-stream.
This year’s Hypatia Lecture is entitled “Neurodiversity and Capitalism” and will be delivered by prof. dr. Robert Chapman. Chapman is the world’s first Assistant Professor in Critical Neurodiversity Studies, at the Institute for Medical Humanities at Durham University. Their book Empire of Normality: Neurodiversity and Capitalism (2023, Pluto Press) exposes the myth of ‘the normal brain’ as a product of intensified capitalism. A Dutch review of the book by Lisanne Meinen can be found here.
The preparations will consist of readings (to be distributed in a reader) and participation. ReMA students can earn a certificate of 1,5 ECTS for participation if they attend both days.
