About the topic

Dutch and Flemish philosophers are ‘taalkunstenaars’: they have always excelled in combining philosophy with storytelling. Therefore, this year we propose to emphasize this special talent with the theme ‘Sterke Verhalen’. Additionally, the 36th DFDOP will feature academic philosophy with a twist. Since we host this year’s DFDOP at the ISVW and not at a university, we propose an alternative format to the conventional conference program of the DFDOP. For a more comprehensive overview, please visit the organizers’ webpage.

Aim / objective

Our model is the so-called ‘science slam’, an increasingly popular event in which scientists of all disciplines present and explain their research in relatively short time (usually 10 minutes) to a broad public. Examples of Science Slam presentations can be found here. This format encourages clear, compelling, as well as entertaining and instructive communication of ideas. Good presentations do not dumb down their topic; rather, they manage to communicate an important insight from their research in an accessible way that relates to the experience of the audience.

It should be obvious that the skills required for a good presentation in our format are of value for all philosophers. Unfortunately, the value of a compelling presentation of ideas is often marginalized or overlooked in current academic philosophy. We don’t think this point needs much elaboration – countless examples in the history of science show how rhetoric was often a crucial factor in a new theory’s success. Moreover, making our research relevant for our society is crucial for our profession. ‘Valorisation’ of one’s research project has become a key component in writing grant proposals. Being able to express clearly and compellingly what we are doing as philosophers is a valuable first step for our own benefit, as well as a point that befits the goals of this year’s host institution, the ISVW. So come and challenge yourselves, learn from your colleagues and/or get refreshed inspiration for your own research by presenting it in an alternative format!
