Core Philosophy Texts: Close Reading

Description

It is becoming increasingly rare that philosophy students get a chance to read an original source book in its entirety. This—paired with general reduction of reading load at the universities—Increases the risk of misinterpretations and poor quality of philosophical output, lack of bigger picture for understanding reasons and context of claims and arguments, and the lack of certain professional skills such as analysing and interpreting complex and extensive argumentation.

This course aims at helping students to develop essential philosophy reading skills. The course helps students develop and practice a set of reading skills such that allows for a creative and comprehensive interpretation of the text, following the structure of complex, extensive and possibly scattered arguments, and their critical evaluation. During the course, students read one book; the

texts are selected from theoretical or practical philosophy and change every year. Books suggestions are welcome—but we cannot guarantee that your favourite will be selected for the upcoming year.

This year we will read Aristotle’s work On the Soul (also known as De Anima). Please note that in the classroom we will use this bilingual edition which is freely available on Archive.org (see preparation below).
