Symposium 'The future of academic philosophy' (Dutch event) Broerstraat 5, Groningen

Dear all,

We live in an age in which the university is increasingly dependent upon the writing of research proposals, and applying for research grants. The question arises to what extent this model influences the direction of research. That is to say: what research topics will be considered valuable or worthwhile is, by definition, never measured with a neutral or objective standard. Because of these developments, the independence of philosophy as a discipline is up for debate. That debate is one that we want to engage in on the 15th of march.

During the symposium several speakers will elaborate on their views on the topic by adressing this question: to what extent is the university still a good home to philosophy? The programming will allow plenty of time for questions and debate.

Do note that the entire afternoon will be held in Dutch. Signing up is appreciated and can be done via filosofie-symposium@rug.nl or through the facebook-event ‘toekomst van de filosofie’. We hope to see as many as possible on the 15th! Best wishes, Tim van Heuven (studentassessor faculty of philosophy) Jan Bant (chairman student representation faculty council) Jos Spijkerman (Board study association STUFF)
